With the help of Brian Eno and Phil Manzanera, John Cale follows up his lush and light pop album Paris 1919 with the dark, irreverently funny album, Fear, released October 1, 1974. It must have been confusing for Cale to see his Velvet Underground partner Lou Reed score hit records and finally earn money without selling out. ( This was recorded before he heard Sally Can't Dance). So maybe darkness offered an opportunity to be heard by more people?
“[I] was trying to be Lou." Cale later admitted. " I was on keyboards, guitar and bass . . . the title song disintegrates into a frenzied 'say, fear is a man's best friend', less sung than shouted.”
now this IS a quality album.
